The University of Mississippi Medical Center
The "Statement of Purpose" of the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) clearly outlines the institutional commitment to provide an educational environment that promotes personal and professional development; assures attainment of competency in medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, communication skills, practice based learning and improvement, and systems based practice; fosters respect for and sensitivity to individual differences; and gives all residents and fellows every opportunity to succeed, regardless of ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic status.
As a key part of accomplishing this goal, UMMC sponsors 40 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved graduate medical education programs, and provides oversight and support for these programs through the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office. The Designated Institutional Official (DIO) provides weekly reports on institutional GME issues and activities to the senior associate deans for academic and health affairs, and the Vice Chancellor, Dean of the School of Medicine, monthly reports to the executive faculty of the School of Medicine, and annual reports on GME activities to the sponsoring hospitals' leadership committees. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is committed to providing all necessary educational, financial, and human resources support to assure outstanding graduate medical education programs.
